| At the workshop, you will get maps and further information on public transport, sightseeing and culture. The local organisers will be available to help you organise your stay. Opera, theatre and museums listed below are all in the city centre of Stuttgart, easy to reach by S-Bahn from the university station. Travel time is less than 10 minutes, leave the train at the station 'Stadtmitte' or 'Hauptbahnhof'. |

Concert hall 'Liederhalle': Classical concerts
and various other events. Early booking recommended. Different events
have different booking facilities, in some cases online booking is
possible.
Music in churches: Stiftskirche Stuttgart and music in protestant churches in Stuttgart. Theatres include Schauspielhaus Stuttgart (regularly performing at several places), as well as various other theatres. |
| Museums and exhibitions | Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
has a large and good collection of classical and modern painting.
Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is showing modern and contemporary art, including a good collection of work of Otto Dix. There are regular special exhibitions. Landesmuseum Württemberg in the old castle of Stuttgart. Huge collection ranging from archeology (including some highlights of Celtic culture) to art and cultural history. Also featuring special exhibitions on local history. Further museums include Lindenmuseum (ethnology), Weissenhof (Bauhaus architecture), Fruchtkasten am Schillerplatz (musical instruments, next to the old castle), Mercedes cars and Porsche cars. |

Interactive map of the area with functions to search for art and culture, nature, restaurants, shopping etc. Popular destinations for hikes starting from the university are Bärenschlössle (map) and Schloss Solitude (see also here). Both are located in the nice forest next to the campus, close to some lakes; paths are signposted well. Walking to Bärenschlössle (one way) takes about half an hour, to Schloss Solitude about one and a half hour. |

| Nearby places to visit | Neighbouring towns with historic centres are Esslingen (25 minutes by S-Bahn) and Tübingen (about one hour by train via Stuttgart Hbf or - using S-Bahn line 1, via Herrenberg that is worth a visit, too). Ludwigsburg is popular for its baroque palace and park. Heidelberg can be reached by direct IC train from Stuttgart Hbf in about 45 minutes, or more frequently (but more expensive and less fast) via Mannheim. |
| Transport in Stuttgart | The Vaihingen campus (S-Bahn station 'Universität')
is well-connected through the S-Bahn network
to the city centre (S-Bahn stop 'Stadtmitte'), to the
central station (Hbf='Hauptbahnhof') and the airport ('Flughafen') and
also to many neighbouring towns. Travelling by S-Bahn to the central
station or to the airport is in general much faster and cheaper than
using a taxi. In addition to the S-Bahn, there is also a network of trams (for Americans: streetcars) and of buses. On the website of the transport company VVS (=Verkehrsverbund Stuttgart) you find information (in German) on timetables ('Fahrplan') and tickets and also maps ('Karten'). When entering your destination please note that the university also has a city centre campus, far away from the Vaihingen one. Entering 'university Vaihingen' will work almost as well as 'Universität Vaihingen'. Here is an explanation of the mobile VVS-app, which also allows to buy tickets.
